Parliament’s Committee on Appointments has commenced the vetting of 81 individuals nominated for various ministerial positions in government.
The committee is chaired by Speaker of Parliament Jacob Marksons Oboth, with Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa serving as his deputy. The vetting exercise is scheduled to take place over two days, ending on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni appointed the Cabinet and State Ministers on May 26, 2026. Parliament subsequently approved the composition of the Committee on Appointments during a plenary sitting held last week.
The committee includes the Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, and several Members of Parliament drawn from different political parties and interests.
The vetting process began at 7:30 a.m., with some of the first nominees appearing before the committee including Crispus Kiyonga, nominated as Second Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament; Frank Tumwebaze, nominated as Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries; and Jonard Asiimwe, nominated as Minister in the Office of the President in charge of Science, Technology and Innovation.
The Committee on Appointments is one of Parliament’s standing committees and serves a term of two and a half years.
Its primary responsibility is to scrutinize, vet, and either approve or reject nominees appointed by the President to senior public offices, including ministerial and judicial positions.
Parliament has indicated that updates from the vetting exercise will be shared through its official social media platforms, including X, Instagram, and TikTok.
