The Bubulo Chief Magistrate Court has sentenced a man to 15 years jail time for attempted murder.

The convict, Derick Kuloba, 27, a resident of Bududa district was found guilty of chopping off 6-year-old Evelyn Namasopo’s hand in a bush after she refused his marriage offer.

Namasopo, a former student of Bushiyi Christian Secondary School and resident of Nabweya sub-county in Bududa district was attacked in July last year near a forest while on her way home to pick up food for her mother who had been hospitalized.

The victim has been nursing her injury for over a year now at Mbale Regional Referral hospital.

In her ruling on Tuesday afternoon, the Bubulo Chief Magistrate, Esther Nalungi stated that Kuloba wasted the court's time by showing no remorse for his actions. She also ruled that the victim be compensated 50 million shillings.

Nalungi  Stated that the 15-year-jail term will help the convict to reform and return to society a better person.

“The convict is 27 now, this sentence gives him a chance to return to society still young and reformed, at the same time the sentence will serve as an example to the youth, not to commit similar crimes,” - Nalungi ruled.

Kuloba has been on remand for four months the convict spent on remand.

The Defense lawyer, Geoffrey Nappa, said they would  file an appeal because the magistrate who delivered the judgment is different from the one who heard the case.
