The Uganda Electoral Commission (EC) concluded its two-day nomination exercise for the 2026 presidential elections at its Lweza offices, confirming eight candidates for the ballot. EC Chairperson Simon Byabakama Mugenyi stated this final count.
The nominations occurred on September 23rd and 24th, 2025. Day one saw the clearance of three candidates: incumbent President Museveni, and independent candidates Elton Joseph Mabirizi and Robert Kasibante of the Peasants Party.
Day two, September 24th, added five candidates. These included Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) of the National Unity Platform (NUP), whose nomination garnered significant attention as he declared a "protest vote" campaign. Also nominated were Nathan Nandala Mafabi (Forum for Democratic Change - FDC), Mugisha Muntu (Alliance for National Transformation - ANT), Mubarak Munyagwa (Common Man’s Party), and Frank Bulira Kabinga (Revolutionary People’s Party).
The EC officially sets the stage for the high-stakes contest. Official campaigns are set to kick off on September 29, 2025. Chairman Byabakama urged all candidates and supporters to engage in lawful, peaceful, and issue-based campaigns, strictly warning against violence to maintain the country's peace.
