Musician Spice Diana has added her voice to the growing conversation around social media regulation and digital business, calling on government to fully reopen Facebook while pushing for structured restrictions on TikTok.
Speaking in an interview on a local podcast, the singer said Facebook remains a vital platform for businesses and creatives, but its continued restriction in Uganda has limited growth and forced users to rely on VPNs.
“Facebook should be opened so that it has no many restrictions in the country. There should be no need for VPNs so that businesses can thrive,” Spice Diana said.
She explained that reopening Facebook would benefit entrepreneurs, creatives, and the wider community by easing communication, marketing, and trade.
However, while praising TikTok for its economic impact, Spice Diana called for government guidelines to address what she described as rising indiscipline on the platform.
According to the singer, TikTok has become a powerful income-generating tool for young people, musicians, and business owners, but the lack of regulation has also allowed harmful behaviour to flourish.
“I think government should put guidelines on TikTok because it is a business. People are earning a lot of money from it, but there is so much indiscipline there,” she explained.
Spice Diana noted that TikTok plays a key role in music promotion and brand visibility, but warned that some users misuse it to attack or discredit others unnecessarily.
“It’s beautiful that we have TikTok. Many young people are making a living from it, and for us in music, it helps us promote our work quickly. But some people are using it to put artistes down, which is unnecessary,” she added.
The singer acknowledged that regulating digital platforms is complex but maintained that reasonable guidelines would make TikTok safer and more productive for all users.
Her remarks are expected to spark mixed reactions, especially among users who oppose any form of social media regulation, while others agree that structure could help curb abuse without killing creativity.
