The Portuguese is the bookies favourite to take over from Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, after being sacked by Chelsea in December.

Last month it was claimed Mourinho wrote a six-page letter to United outlining why he should take over from Van Gaal.

And according to Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, who cite informed sources in Portugal, Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes "has done his job" and found his client a new position.

Van Gaal's contract with United ends next season but he has come under increasing pressure after a poor run of form.

The Daily Star have claimed executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has already decided to sack Van Gaal at the end of the campaign.

And the appointment of Pep Guardiola as Manchester City's new boss has added pressure on United to get Mourinho.
