On Tuesday this week, musician and politician Ali Buken, also known as Nubian Li, was arrested by the Uganda Police shortly after his nomination.
In a video circulating on social media, Nubian Li was surrounded by several men in police uniforms and put into a waiting police pickup truck.
The reason for his arrest has not been confirmed as the police have not issued a statement. However, allegations suggest it is linked to the army-like parade that took place at the party headquarters earlier this year.
Nubian Li's wife, who was present at the time of his arrest, was seen crying as the singer was taken away. She did not comment on the arrest but appeared visibly heartbroken.
His arrest was confirmed by the Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, who claimed the arrest is a result of the government's fear.
"A short while ago, as he exited the Electoral Commission offices in Ntinda after being nominated for the position of Nakawa Mayor, Ali Buken (Nubian Li) was pushed into a police truck and taken to an unknown location. The fear of the regime is evident. Let’s press on!" he wrote on his social media platforms.
Nubian Li joins a list of other close friends of Bobi Wine, including Eddy Mutwe, Achilewo Kivumbi, and Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, among others, who are already in jail on various charges.
Nubian Li was arrested minutes after his nomination. The singer is running for the mayorship of Nakawa Division under the National Unity Platform flag.
