Social media celebrity Magala Balikyewunya, popularly known as Mzee Magala, has been remanded to prison over an attempted murder charge, days before a fire reportedly destroyed much of his residential home in Luwero District.

Mzee Magala was remanded to Butuntumula Government Prison on Thursday, November 5, 2026. He is expected to return to court on November 12 for the mention of his case.

Police have confirmed his arrest and remand, although details about the alleged victim and the circumstances surrounding the charge have not yet been disclosed.

Under Section 204 of Uganda’s Penal Code Act, attempted murder is a felony punishable by life imprisonment upon conviction.

While Magala remained in prison, a fire broke out at his home in Bunyaka Village, Luwero Town Council, early Sunday morning, leaving the building extensively damaged.

Savannah Regional Police spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police Sam Twiineamazima confirmed the incident, saying preliminary findings suggest the fire could have been deliberately started.

“The preliminary cause of the fire is suspected to be arson. Investigations are still ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident,” ASP Twiineamazima said.

Police are also investigating whether the fire is connected to the attempted murder case against Mzee Magala. No connection has been established so far.
