Renowned media personality and events host Omulangira Ndausi has alleged that the Ugandan government is deliberately stifling the music industry to prevent the emergence of another influential figure like Bobi Wine.

Speaking in an interview with a local television station, Ndausi—who has spent decades in the entertainment industry—said the music scene is no longer as vibrant as it once was due to deliberate structural and administrative barriers.

Ndausi, a figure respected across industry divides and known to have worked closely with top artistes including Jose Chameleone, Bebe Cool, and Bobi Wine, said the decline is not accidental.

“The government doesn’t want to see another Bobi Wine coming up. They are afraid of the influence musicians can grow to have,” Ndausi said.

He explained that authorities have introduced excessive requirements and clearances for concerts and shows, making it increasingly difficult for promoters and artistes to organise events.

According to Ndausi, these bureaucratic hurdles have limited growth, reduced income opportunities, and discouraged creativity across the industry.

“All the necessities and clearances demanded from promoters planning concerts are a limitation. In the long run, the entire industry is affected,” he explained.

Ndausi further pointed out that the politicisation of musicians has also played a role in slowing creativity, as many artistes are now deeply involved in political activism rather than focusing on their craft.

“Musicians themselves have also fully engaged in politics, and this has limited their creativity,” he added.

His remarks come at a time when several artistes have complained about concert cancellations, police interference, and shrinking performance opportunities—issues that continue to fuel debate about freedom of expression and the future of Uganda’s creative industry.
