The outgoing Mawokota South MP, Yusuf Nsibambi, has officially crossed from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), citing lack of direction and coordination within the opposition.

Nsibambi made the announcement on Wednesday at the NRM Secretariat, stressing that his decision was not abrupt but followed deep reflection on the state of opposition politics in Uganda.

According to him, the opposition’s biggest challenge has been failure to harmonise positions on key national matters.

“There is no proper direction. We have never sat as opposition parties to harmonise our positions on key national issues. Decisions are taken without consultation, and that confusion has affected our credibility before the electorate,” he said.

At the party secretariat, Nsibambi was received by Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among and NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong.

He further described President Yoweri Museveni as a leader who listens to everyone, revealing that a personal conversation with the Head of State influenced his decision.

“When I talked with President Museveni, I realised he is a good person who listens to everyone. That is not what I experienced on the Opposition side,” he explained.

However, his move has drawn sharp criticism from opposition figures. Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago described the decision as immoral and selfish.

“The right to join a political party of one's choice is guaranteed under the law, but it's immoral and reprehensible for you, Hon. Nsibambi Yusuf, to leverage the plight of political prisoners for your adventures and self-aggrandisement,” Lukwago stated.

Nsibambi’s defection adds to the ongoing political realignments as parties prepare for the upcoming electoral cycle.
