A fresh debate on media freedom has emerged after the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, publicly threatened to shut down Daily Monitor and NTV Uganda, two of Uganda’s leading independent media houses.

In a statement shared on his social media platform, Muhoozi expressed his intention to switch off both media outlets, although he did not provide specific reasons for the proposed action.

"I want to switch off both Daily Monitor and NTV Uganda. I will do it soon. I just need clearance from Mzee," Muhoozi wrote, referring to President Yoweri Museveni.

The remarks have sparked widespread reactions from journalists, media practitioners, political analysts, and members of the public, with many questioning the motive behind the threat and its potential implications for press freedom in Uganda.

Daily Monitor and NTV Uganda are among the country's most influential news organisations, known for their extensive coverage of politics, governance, business, and current affairs.

As of now, neither Daily Monitor nor NTV Uganda has officially responded to Muhoozi's comments. The statement continues to fuel discussions about the relationship between state institutions and independent media in Uganda.
