Music icon Moses Matovu, one of the founding members of Afrigo Band, has died after he was allegedly attacked by unknown assailants in Kampala.
According to his relatives, Matovu was heading to a nearby mosque for prayers when he was allegedly approached by a man who punched him in the chest.
The musician reportedly fell to the ground and hit his head on the roadside pavement, sustaining severe injuries.
Police have confirmed that they are investigating the death as a suspected murder.
“Police at Kabalagala have registered a case of suspected murder involving Matovu Moses, a musician with Afrigo Band,” police said.
According to police, Matovu was allegedly attacked on the morning of September 24, 2026, by unknown assailants at Kibuli Market Zone B in Makindye Division, Kampala District.
He was rushed to Kibuli Hospital for medical attention but later succumbed to his injuries.
“Our task team is currently at the scene conducting investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. Efforts are also underway to identify and apprehend the suspected assailants,” police said.
Police added that more details would be released as investigations progress.
Matovu was born on June 19, 1949, and was among the musicians who founded Afrigo Band, Uganda’s longest-running band. The band was formed in 1975 following the breakup of Cranes Band.
At the time of his death, Matovu was still active in music and was expected to perform in London next month.
His death marks a major loss to Uganda’s music industry, particularly the generation of musicians who helped shape the country’s live-band scene.
