A team of officers from Uganda revenue authority, URA have this morning intercepted a Toyota Noah Reg. No. UAY 530K at Mpondwe, smuggling sugar.
According to a statement from URA, the Mpondwe enforcement team working on Intel gathered about a smuggling ring, intercepted smugglers who were ferrying in 1 Ton of sweet brown Mozambican sugar through the shallow waters of River Lubilha.
“Once inland, the smugglers transferred the contraband from a water vessel into the Toyota Noah, to find their way to Kasese.
The enforcement team which was strategically positioned in between Kikorongo and Kasese caved in on the car intercepting the smugglers in the process.”
According to URA, smuggling is a crime punishable by Law.
In a related development, at 3:00am this morning, the Busia enforcement team intercepted a Toyota Corolla UAH 905Z heading to Tororo district after a brief pursuit.
The Toyota Corolla was used to smuggle inland 30 bundles of contraband polythene bags from Kenya via Amungula.
Both the contraband and the means of conveyance are in custody.
