Police in Kampala are yet to present to the court a woman captured on video stealing one million shillings from a shopkeeper in downtown Kampala.

The suspect Jane Unaneza is still in police custody at the Central Police Station offices where she was taken on Wednesday evening following the viral video showing her stealing money from a Pentagon Plaza shop located at the former Qualicel Bus park opposite the New Taxi Park.

The video that started making rounds on social media platforms three days ago shows Unaneza pretending to be trying out a pair of shoes as a potential buyer.

The suspect is seen stretching her hand over the counter and into a black open handbag. She then picks a bundle of money while Sarah Mugerwa the shop attendant is focused on fitting her shoes.

After about an hour, Mugerwa notices that her money had been stolen.

According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, Mugerwa told police that the bundle of money stolen by Unaneza had one million shillings.

Unaneza was picked at Buganda road court where she was present for the mention of another theft case after she was earlier arrested by another police post downtown.

“We have noticed that Unaneza is a serial shoplifter. She was at Buganda road court over the same offenses which CPS was not aware [of]. We are now going to charge her for shoplifting before this weekend.”

Patrick Onyango says

He says that Unaneza has theft cases at various police posts in Nakivubo, Kisekka New Taxi Park, and at the Old Kampala divisional station.
