Drama is mounting at the ivory tower as non-teaching staff of the prestigious Makerere University disagree over sharing of the Shillings 2.4 Billion salary arrears.

Problems started after they could not agree on the mode of distribution of the funds.

Reports from the ivory tower indicate that the different staff groups have been complaining of unequal distribution of the money claiming that the administrative staff had awarded themselves more money at the expense of support staff.

The development follows a commitment by government in August this year, to refund 13 billion shillings that had been allocated for salary enhancement but was later channeled to kick-start the operation of three new public universities of Muni, Kabale and Soroti. This commitment followed a 17-day sit-down strike by the staff.

Early this month, government released the first batch of 10 billion shillings for all non-teaching staff in public universities of which Makerere University took 4.2 billion to be distributed amongst the staff.

A source says that support staff members are bitter with the way money has been distributed and according to the source, the least paid staff according to the university salary scale will get 700,000 shillings for the four months.

The new committee chaired by Tamale, will deliver a harmonized structure on Monday October 24.
