The Ugandan government has today, 26 January 2026, lifted the temporary restrictions that had been imposed on several social media platforms across the country.
The restrictions followed a nationwide internet shutdown that was enforced during the recent elections. Authorities said the move was meant to prevent the spread of misinformation, election fraud, and the incitement of violence.
Although general internet services were restored on Saturday, 17 January 2026, access to major social media platforms remained blocked until today. Platforms such as TikTok, WhatsApp, and X (formerly Twitter) are now accessible again without the use of VPNs.
However, Facebook remains restricted and is still inaccessible without virtual private networks.
During the shutdown period, many Ugandans turned to VPN services to bypass the restrictions and stay connected.
Announcing the development, the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, thanked Ugandans for their cooperation throughout the election period.
“We are releasing all social media today. I thank all the great people of Uganda for their support and co-operation throughout this electoral season. You are truly the greatest people on earth and you give us all the courage to serve. God bless you all,” Muhoozi wrote on his X account.
With the exception of Facebook, all major social media platforms are now fully accessible nationwide.
