Media personality Edwin Katamba, popularly known as MC Kats, has criticized Ugandan television stations over their recruitment of presenters, arguing that social media popularity has taken precedence over broadcasting talent and experience.
Speaking during an interview on a local podcast, MC Kats said the media industry has shifted away from traditional hiring standards, with viral TikTok personalities increasingly landing roles on national television.
The former WBS TV, NTV Uganda and NBS TV presenter said he became concerned after observing the new generation of television presenters before deciding to step away from the industry.
"Before quitting TV, I looked at different TV stations and their respective presenters, apart from the seniors like Dagy Nyce, Douglas Lwanga, and Calvin Da Entertainer, and I was like, 'I can't be on TV with a TikToker who blasphems, with a girl who just showed her nudes and they're working on national TV. I can't be in this box anymore!'" MC Kats said.
According to him, the growing influence of social media has changed how presenters are recruited, with online popularity now outweighing conventional media training and experience.
MC Kats argued that the industry's traditional recruitment process, including screen tests, has largely been replaced by social media metrics.
"Social media numbers hold the power now. You think people still go for screen tests as I went to WBS TV? It's about how many people you have on TikTok, how much noise you make on TikTok, and you're given a TV show. You learn from the job," he added.
His remarks come amid continued debate over the influence of social media personalities on mainstream media and evolving standards for television talent recruitment.
