Former leader of opposition in parliament Wafula Oguttu has handed over the office to the newly appointed LOP, Winnie Kizza at Parliament today.
In her opening said they want to set a precedent in Uganda that power can be transferred freely and peacefully to others.
The outgoing Leader of the Opposition Oguttu said the office of the LoP has been given a budget of 2bn, to facilitate officers, and shadow cabinet.
He highlighted a few challenges like the police cells that have turned into prisons with opposition members being kept in for longer than necessary.
“The police cells have turned into prisons. People are kept in for longer than necessary.”
He also claims that once the accountability committees are appointed, they report to the Speaker, and not the LOP, while their reports from accountability committees are never debated on the floor because they are poorly written, attacking the government.
