Students at Bishop Ogez High school in Nyabubare Sub County in Bushenyi went on strike destroying school properties worth millions, as they protested against torture by prefects.

Hell broke loose on 13th April 2016 at 01:00am, when students went on rampage smashing windows and door panes of the administration block with stones.

According to police spokesperson Fred Enanga, police rushed to the scene and arrested 21 students of which 19 are S.3, 01 from S.4 and 01 from S.6. All the culprits are still detained at Bushenyi Police station as inquiries continue.

According to Enanga, the strike stems way back on 10/04/2016 at around 20:30hrs when one Tukamuhebwa Brian, a senior six student who is also a prefect in charge of discipline slapped two female students, Brenda Atuhaire and Daphin Nuwamanya all in form three.

“The act by the prefect irritated S.3 students and they wanted to confront him but the Headmaster Deus Kabigumira intervened. He talked to the aggrieved students who demanded the immediate removal of this prefect, but the administration delayed to implement it, hence causing them to react the way they did,” Enanga explained.

By the time of filing this report, the school administration together with police and other stakeholders were in a meeting to forge a way forward. But, Enanga tells us that the situation is still calm and monitoring continues.
