Chairman Nyanzi Fred Sentamu, one of NUP’s most vocal mobilisers, is reportedly contemplating quitting active politics following a painful defeat in the Kawempe South MP race.
Nyanzi suffered a heavy loss to NRM’s Madinah Nsereko, who polled over 18,000 votes, leaving him trailing with about 11,000 votes — a result that visibly broke the Sentamu family strongman.
At the Kololo tally centre, an emotional Nyanzi struggled to hold back tears, openly accusing the returning officer of vote manipulation and claiming his votes were allegedly swapped with those of Madinah Nsereko.
“It’s terrible and one wonders what to do. Our elections are no longer true and fair. They have lost meaning, and it makes me fed up,” Nyanzi said as tears rolled down his cheeks.
Sources further allege that Nyanzi failed to secure declaration of results forms, with claims that several of his polling agents were bought off by his rival’s camp — accusations that have fueled his frustration and despair.
Despite being regarded as a powerhouse within NUP, Nyanzi now appears disillusioned, hinting that the political terrain may no longer be worth the fight.
This is not his first electoral heartbreak. In the 2021 general elections, Nyanzi also lost the Kampala Central MP seat to Muhammad Nsereko, making his political journey one marked by repeated setbacks.
