Ugandan singer King Saha has criticized the government over how it handles support for musicians, insisting that handouts will not solve the industry’s problems.

Speaking in an interview with a local television station, the opposition-leaning artist argued that giving envelopes of money to a few musicians does little to develop the music sector.

According to King Saha, what the industry truly needs is proper enforcement of the Copyright Amendment Bill Uganda.

“Government support should be law and structure, not envelopes. Enforce copyright law and watch the industry fix itself,” he said.

The singer emphasized that once the law is properly implemented, musicians will be able to earn from their work without relying on financial handouts.

“We need better than handouts,” he added.

King Saha’s remarks come at a time when the proposed copyright amendment continues to spark debate among musicians and lawmakers.

The bill recently went through a second reading at the Parliament of Uganda and is expected to return for further debate next week.

Many artists believe the amendment could transform the industry by ensuring musicians are compensated whenever their music is played on radio, television, and other platforms.
