INTERVIEW: Miss Uganda Rising Woman Irene Nakitende Reveals She’s Single, Crushing On Maurice Kirya and More

You have probably bumped into her, either on social media or attending events in town. Irene Nakitende, Miss Uganda rising woman is hilarious, witty and honest.  Born and raised in Natete, a Kampala low suburb, Irene went to Shimoni Demonstration School for primary.  She later joined Atlas High School. She is currently studying at Ndejje University.

At Atlas, she joined a youth group called Reach A Hand Foundation. Here she got exposed and she interacted with peer educators.

In her senior six vacations, she decided to start giving back to charity by reaching out to the needy. She slowly got noticed and signed up at Reminant Generation. Her brother, Isaac Sejjobwe, started funding her as she actively worked with the charity. Last year, she won Miss Uganda raising star replacing Gashumba’s foster girl, Aisha Nabukeera. We talked to her and she shared her story with us.

Reporter: Going through mixed schools all your secondary life, how did it build your confidence as a young girl?

Nakitende: Yes, I got a chance to interact with boys. I learnt how to handle boys and how to speak in public.

Reporter: You joined Miss Uganda at a tender age, how did your parents react to it?

Nakitende: They were so happy for me. Actually, my father (RIP) promised to support me all the way. Before he died, he was so supportive. My mum still believes in me and I haven’t disappointed her.

Reporter: how did Miss Uganda change your life?

Nakitende: My life has changed and I have also impacted on many people. I do different kinds of charity around the country. I have also got enough exposure from different angles, media and all over the world.

Reporter: Most of Miss Uganda queens have lost relevance after their tenure. What’s your take on this?

Nakitende: I can't say much because I don’t judge people. Everyone has a right to live her life the way she wants. I will concentrate on mine. I want to be remembered for helping the needy.

Reporter: During Sylia Awori’s time, there were reports that she used to sell girls to rich men for pleasure, Have you heard of these reports?

Nakitende: As far as I know, Sylvia Awori is a professional lady. I have never heard about such allegations. According to me, when I was still growing up, I used to know that all Miss Ugandans are prostitutes but as I grew up I found out it was not true.

Reporter: Besides Miss Uganda, what kind of a woman do you want to become?

Nakitende: I want to do so much. I want to help. I want to be that kind of woman who will be recognised in every sector life. That’s how ambitious I am.

Reporter: In three words, how do you describe yourself?

Nakitende: Loveable, Passionate and determined

Reporter: Who is the male celebrity you crush on?

Nakitende: I don’t have any but I love Maurice Kirya’s songs. I am just in love with him because of his songs.

Reporter: In your free time, what kind of Music do you listen to?

Nakitende: I listen to Juliana Kanyomwozi and Sheeba Karungi’s music and other Ugandan songs.

Reporter: Are you dating anyone?

Nakitende: I have never dated. I am single and not ready to settle down for any relationship yet.

Reporter: Who is your ideal guy?

Nakitende: I love an honest man, God fearing, handsome and hard working and on top of that, he must be lovely.

Reporter: One word, Money or looks in a man

Nakitende: Ahhhhhh… who doesn’t want money? Me I want both. I want money and looks in a man.
