Ugandan business mogul Sudhir Ruparelia and his family visited Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary on June 20, 2026, to adopt and name a seven-month-old chimpanzee after his late son, Rajiv Ruparelia. Rajiv tragically died in a car accident in May 2025.
The family donated Shs 50 million toward the welfare of the chimpanzee, affectionately named RR, and the sanctuary's general upkeep.
The young chimp was born on November 29, 2025, to a rescued female named Africa due to a failed contraceptive implant. While Ngamba Island enforces a strict no-breeding policy because it has exceeded its carrying capacity, sanctuary officials noted that a new, more effective surgical implant method has since been adopted for future population management.
Sudhir expressed that the gesture honors Rajiv's deep passion for wildlife conservation, nature, and protecting the vulnerable.
The Ruparelia family and foundation have a long history of supporting the sanctuary, having previously adopted a chimpanzee named Ruparelia nine years ago.
Sanctuary officials praised the family’s continued generosity, noting that naming and adoption initiatives remain vital for raising funds to care for the island's orphaned chimpanzees.
