The High Court of Uganda is set to determine the political fate of Mathias Walukaaga in a highly anticipated ruling scheduled for December 22.
The court will hear and rule on Walukaaga’s petition challenging the decision of the Electoral Commission to disqualify him from contesting in the Busiro East Member of Parliament race.
The matter is being handled by High Court Judge Justice Simon Kinobe, who is expected to deliver the final ruling later this month.
Walukaaga was earlier disqualified by the Electoral Commission tribunal on grounds that he allegedly failed to meet the minimum academic qualifications required to contest for the parliamentary seat.
Unwilling to concede defeat, the Kadongo Kamu singer-turned-politician moved to the High Court, seeking to overturn the tribunal’s decision and secure clearance to run for office.
Speaking earlier this week, Walukaaga expressed confidence in the judicial process, stating that he believes the court will deliver justice.
“I am confident that court will give me justice,” Walukaaga said while addressing the matter on Monday.
Legal experts note that because Walukaaga is challenging a tribunal decision, the High Court serves as both the first and final appellate court, meaning its ruling will be conclusive with no further avenue for appeal.
The case has drawn significant public attention, especially from Walukaaga’s supporters, who argue that his disqualification was unfair and politically motivated.
As December 22 approaches, all eyes will be on the High Court to see whether Walukaaga will be cleared to return to the political race—or whether his parliamentary ambitions will be brought to a halt.
