Tension escalated on Monday morning after police blocked lawyers and leaders from the National Unity Platform (NUP) from accessing the home of party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu in Magere.
The legal team, which included Members of Parliament and senior counsels, had gone to consult with some of their colleagues who were reportedly detained within the premises.
However, their mission was cut short when police denied them entry, insisting that they needed written clearance from police headquarters before accessing the residence.
In the process, prominent lawyer Kakuru Tumusiime was arrested after refusing to back down and insisting on being allowed to see his clients.
Eyewitnesses say the area around Bobi Wine’s home was heavily guarded by security forces, creating an atmosphere of tension and uncertainty.
Police later issued a statement claiming that the deployment around the NUP leader’s residence was not a form of house arrest but rather an “operational posture” aimed at maintaining peace and security.
According to police, the move was purely preventive and not intended to restrict Bobi Wine’s freedom.
Meanwhile, the Uganda Law Society had earlier called for the withdrawal of the security personnel, arguing that the heavy presence was незакон and a violation of basic legal rights.
The incident has sparked outrage among opposition supporters, with many accusing the state of intimidation and shrinking democratic space, especially targeting opposition figures.
As of now, Kakuru Tumusiime remains in police custody, and NUP leaders say they will continue pushing for access to Bobi Wine and their detained colleagues.
