rapper Da Agent says the biggest challenge limiting Ugandan music from achieving greater international recognition is not talent, but the level of ambition among artists.
His comments come amid ongoing debate sparked by Kenyan singer Bien's remarks about the differences between Uganda's and Kenya's music industries and why Ugandan artists have struggled to expand globally.
According to Da Agent, many Ugandan musicians are comfortable building successful careers within the local market and do not necessarily prioritize pursuing international audiences.
He said there is nothing wrong with artists focusing on the domestic scene, especially those who have mastered entertaining and maintaining a loyal local fanbase.
"Some of them are okay entertaining their local audiences and are very good at it. Some people can't even do it like they do," Da Agent said.
However, the rapper agreed that production quality remains one of the areas where Uganda still needs improvement. He noted that while Ugandan producers are developing, other markets in the region adopted modern production techniques much earlier.
"Our production, our people are still learning the new things yet our competitors learnt them 10 years ago," he added.
Da Agent believes that a combination of stronger ambition and improved production standards could help Ugandan musicians compete more effectively on the international stage.
