On Tuesday of this week, MP Nyeko Derrick announced that he will not be contesting for the Makindye East MP position in the upcoming 2026 elections.

The politician explained that he will continue to be part of the struggle and the National Unity Platform in particular, but he will be taking a back seat.

His announcement received mixed reactions from people on social media. Some praised him for taking the decision while others asked him not to give up on the position.

Reports have now emerged indicating that Nyeko was briefed last Thursday about not being given the NUP party ticket. He was asked to take a safe route out or face a public announcement when the party officially reveals its candidates.

His absence from the race has boosted Tuff B's chances of being given the NUP party ticket to contest for the position in 2026.

Tuff B now remains the strongest candidate on the ground after Mr. Mosh, who had earlier expressed interest, quit to settle for council representation of the same area.

Tuff B, however, awaits the party's approval for him to be given the mandate by the biggest opposition party in the country.
