One of East Africa’s biggest media ownership shifts has taken place after Tanzanian businessman Rostam Azizi acquired a controlling stake in Nation Media Group.

The stake was previously held by the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development, which has owned the regional media powerhouse for 66 years.

Through his company Taarifa Ltd, Azizi will take over the 54.08% stake that was held via NPRT Holdings Africa Limited, effectively becoming the new controlling shareholder of the media group.

Nation Media Group is one of the most influential media houses in East Africa and owns several major outlets including Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, NTV Kenya, KFM, and Dembe FM.

The takeover signals one of the largest media ownership transitions in the region’s history, potentially reshaping the direction of the company and its editorial influence.

Rostam Azizi is known for his vast business empire spanning several industries, including media, mining, telecommunications, agriculture, real estate, port facilities, energy, and construction.

The deal now marks the end of an era for the Aga Khan-linked investment arm, which had been closely associated with the growth and expansion of Nation Media Group across East Africa.
