Lydia Jazmine Questions UGX 1.4 Million UPRS Royalty Payment

Singer Lydia Jazmine has confirmed receiving UGX 1.4 million in royalties from the Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS), but says the amount falls far short of what she expected after years in the music industry.

Unlike some artists who publicly celebrated their payouts, Jazmine initially chose to remain silent. However, she has now admitted she was disappointed by the amount credited to her.

“But that's small money. You can't tell me all those years I have worked for Shs 1.4m. I saw what others got, but I don't know what's wrong,” she said.

Payment Sent Before She Was Contacted

Jazmine revealed that she had little input in the process because the money had already been deposited into her mobile money account before she was informed.

“I just said okay and accepted it. He called me when he had already deposited on mobile money,” she explained.

Royalty Debate Continues

Her remarks add to the growing conversation about music royalties in Uganda, with several artists questioning whether they are receiving fair compensation for the use of their music.

The discussion intensified after Spice Diana publicly revealed receiving the same UGX 1.4 million payout, while Weasel Manizo disclosed receiving approximately UGX 250,000.

Jazmine's comments are expected to renew calls from musicians for greater transparency and accountability in the collection and distribution of royalties.
