TikTokers and social media influencers across Uganda are celebrating after the Constitutional Court of Uganda struck down the Computer Misuse (Amendment) Act, 2022, declaring it null and void.
In its ruling, the court found that the law was improperly passed by Parliament of Uganda, citing lack of quorum and failure to follow proper parliamentary procedures.
Part of the judgment noted that the process violated constitutional provisions, rendering the entire amendment invalid.
The decision has been widely welcomed by content creators, many of whom had previously faced charges under the law.
Among those celebrating is TikToker Frank Ntambi, who expressed relief and satisfaction with the ruling.
“I am happy with the judgment as the law was brought to target critics. It was meant to stop free speech and it can never operate in a democracy,” he said.
Other influencers, including Cephco and Luwilight, who had previously faced charges under the same law, have also welcomed the decision.
The ruling marks a significant moment for freedom of expression in Uganda, especially for digital content creators who had long criticized the law as restrictive and punitive.
