Cinderella Sanyu, popularly known as Cindy, has criticised the Ugandan government, accusing it of neglecting local musicians who are striving for continental and international recognition.

Speaking in a recent interview, the celebrated singer argued that governments in other African countries actively invest in their musicians as a strategy for national branding, something she says Uganda has consistently failed to do.

Cindy pointed to Tanzania as an example, citing Bongo Flava star Diamond Platnumz, whom she claims received support from the Tanzanian government to help market the country through his music and global influence.

“Diamond Platnumz was backed by the Tanzanian government president, who funded his career with the aim of promoting the country through him as an artist. Our government doesn’t care,” she stated.

Her remarks have reignited a long-standing debate among Ugandan music stakeholders over the lack of institutional support for the creative industry.

Over the years, many artists and industry players have raised similar concerns, calling on the government to treat music as a serious economic and cultural sector rather than just entertainment.
