The country has today held an official event to mark the ST. Janan Luwum day at Mucwini, Kitgum his district.
The Prime Minister, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, was the chief guest in honor of the late Arch Bishop of the church of Uganda.

Bishop Luwum was the archbishop of the Church of Uganda from 1974 to 1977 and one of the most influential leaders of the modern church in Africa.
He was arrested in February 1977 and died shortly after. Although the official account describes a car crash, it is generally accepted that he was murdered on the orders of then-President Idi Amin. Archbishop Luwum was a leading voice in criticizing the excesses of the Idi Amin regime that assumed power in 1971.

Janani Luwum was survived by a widow, Mary Lawinyo Luwum who still lives, and nine children. He was buried at his home village of Mucwini in the Kitgum District.
He is recognized as a martyr by the Church of England and the Anglican Communion and his death is commemorated on 17 February as a Lesser Festival. His statue is among the Twentieth Century Martyrs on the front of Westminster Abbey in London.
Last year on such a date, while in Mucwini, Kitgum District the late Bishop’s birth place, President Yoweri Museveni officially declared today a public holiday in honor of Luwum.

The event has been attended among other, the UPC president Olara Otunnu, the clergy led by Arch Bishop Stanley Ntagali, and thousands of people who flocked the land from different parts of the country.

St Janan Luwum becomes the first individual to be dedicated a national day.
