The Internal Affairs Ministry has registered at least 274 guns in civilians’ hands during a drive that was recently launched to curb armed attacks in the country.
Government last month announced an ultimatum to register all licensed firearms used by Civilians by April 30.
By the end of this exercise, aimed at controlling small arms and light weapons owned by civilians and maintaining proper national control over government stockpiles of weapons, Wilfred Okello Makmot, the coordinator, Uganda National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons at the ministry revealed that 274 had been registered.
The registration which was conducted at all district headquarters comes at the backdrop of attacks on Muslim clerics and members of the business community who were gunned down by unknown gangs in different parts of the country.
Okello says; “following the exercise, persons who will be found in possession of unlicensed forearms will be prosecuted and unregistered guns will be forfeited under section 33 of the firearms act.”
Okello states that although the 274 guns marked after the ultimatum is vast, there is a fear that a number of civilians are still in possession of unregistered guns. He says that unregistered guns pose a serious challenge in investigations, identification and trace-ability of fire arms.
