The ministry of gender labour and social development has today addressed the country on the outcomes of the 105th international labour conference which was held from May 30th to June 11th in Geneva Switzerland.
Addressing the media this morning, the ministry’s permanent secretary Pius Bigirimana said Uganda was not among countries that violated labour laws.
The conference establishes and adopts international labour standards and is a forum for discussion of key social and labour questions.
“The international labour conference is the highest decision making body. It adopts the organization’s budget and elects the governing body”says Bigirimana.
He adds that each Member State is represented by a delegation consisting of two government delegates, an employer delegate, a worker delegate, and their respective advisers. Every delegate has the same rights, and all can express themselves freely and vote as they wish.
“This year, the Uganda delegation was led by former Minister of Gender Hon. Wilson Muruli Mukasa, deputized by the permanent secretary, Pius Bigirimana as the alternate Head of delegation, government officials, employers’ and workers’ representatives.”
Bigirimana says the key issues discussed in Geneva include; report of the committee of experts on the application of conventions and recommendations, employment and decent work for peace, security and disaster resilience, and decent work in global supply chains.
