EU Has today launched its national greenhouse gas (GHG) Inventory system, another critical step the country has taken to meet its contribution to the global effort of emission reduction under the Paris Agreement for Climate Change.
Launched this afternoon at offices of ministry of water in Luzira Kampala, the system is expected to help Uganda not only to track and report its emissions but also effectively prioritize emission reduction actions in Key sectors to address climate change.
Onesmus Muhwezi, team leader, Energy and environment at UNDP Uganda said the GHG Inventory System is one of the first country-wide, digital platforms to track and report emission. “But what has been equally impressive, has been to see how Uganda’s ministries, agencies and academia have come together over the last two years and worked hard to make this a reality.”
The GHG Inventory system which has been in development since 2013 was created through collaborative process involving all key stakeholders. The project is funded by the EU, the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) and the Australian Government.
Speaking at the event today, Kristian Schmidt, the Ambassador/ head of the EU Delegation in Uganda said that in addition to the low emissions capacity building project, the EU is supporting other climate specific and sensitive interventions and others in pipeline including promoting use of energy efficient cooking technologies, clean energy generation among others.
“I note with delight the involvement of the Government ministries, agencies and departments in the design and baseline stages of the inventory and tracking system until today when it is ready to be officially launched and operationalized. It will be a big shame for all the effort and investment put to this if the system is not fully utilized.”
