The Kampala capital city Authority, KCCA political administration has apologized to the public over the shocking video indicating the brutality meted on illegal street vendors by some of its enforcement officers during evictions.
The apology was issued this morning during the special council meeting at city hall. It was prompted by the video footage which has been circulating on social media displaying the KCCA officer arresting the street vendor '(a mother) in a dehumanizing manner.
The council chaired by lord mayor Erias Lukwago is now deliberating on how the city Authority can streamline the works of the enforcement team to strike a balance between enforcing and human rights.
The director of KCCA legal team Micheal Obua says so far 56 errant enforcement officers have been dismissed since the inception of KCCA.
The Lord Mayor said; “We condemn that in the strongest terms possible and the fact that some of those arresting officers were men arresting a woman which is totally unacceptable.”
He added that; “We have tasked the director legal and the committee in charge of legal affairs to workout modalities of securing her release because once she was brought here she was charged with disorderly conduct and trading without permit and subsequently sent to Luzira where she is still jailed for 120 days.”
