Uganda has the safest roads among the five East African countries. The development was revealed by Ronald Amanyire the Secretary national road safety council ministry of works and transport.
His revelation comes as Uganda celebrates this year’s National road safety week which started yesterday Monday.
According to Amanyire, the biggest cause of road accidents in Uganda is not lack of driving permits as many think, but driving at a high speed.
This year, police traffic department introduced two operations of Fika salama and Tembeya salama to reduce on the number of accidents that had claimed many lives especially on Masaka high way.
According to Norman Musinga the commander traffic Kampala metropolitan policing area, Tembeya salama which works only in his area of jurisdiction was introduced to support fika salama which was weeding out bad elements on the high ways, by doing the same in the city.
Musinga tells us that the two operations have the same target. As Uganda prepares for the festive season, many accidents are anticipated especially on High ways as people travel upcountry to celebrate with their families, but the operation Fika salama is there to ensure they travel safely.
According to Musinga, buses which are operating illegally are being impounded and routes have been drawn for all to know when and to where they are supposed to travel.
Musinga warns that those without driving permits and insurance, people driving DMCs and drunk drivers will all be arrested and prosecuted.
He advises all drivers to check their vehicles before setting off for long journeys especially is they have families along or passengers.
