Uganda Prison authorities have requested the Health Ministry to carry out mass testing for COVID-19 on all inmates and staff.

The call was made by Frank Baine the Uganda Prisons Service Spokesperson days after 153 inmates and a prison warder at Amuru Prisons tested positive for Covid19.

Two other inmates at Peche isolation center also tested positive for Covid19 through random testing by the Ministry about two weeks ago

Baine says they have requested the Health Ministry to test all inmates and prison staff for Covid19 to establish their status and avoid further spread of the virus to prison facilities.
They also want Uganda Police Force to test all suspects before passing them to prisons.

Baine argues that it is less costly to test than to treat the disease.

Government pardoned 833 minor offenders in April, 2020 in order to reduce congestion in prisons.

The president further ordered the release of all people that were arrested for violating the COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures in July. Museveni.

Uganda has so far lost 20 people to the disease.
