The Buganda Road Magistrates Court has on Friday dismissed a bail application by opposition strongman Dr. Kizza Besigye and his colleague Samuel Lubega Mukaku.

The duo was thrown to Luzira Maximum Prison on Wednesday evening at 6pm for inciting violence following a protest in downtown Kampala over high commodity prices. They were previously held at Nagalama police station until they appeared in court.

The two politicians attached to the political pressure group dubbed People's Front for Transition appeared before Grade One Magistrate Asuman Muhumuza this morning to get bail but it was rejected. Their lawyers Erias Lukwago were told to apply for bail today after court failed to secure it on Wednesday because of time.

Besigye, presented three substantial sureities including the Kampala Capital City Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura and Kitgum Municipality Member of Parliament Denis Onekalit as his sureties.

Meanwhile Mukaku presented former Mbale District Woman Member of Parliament Aspirant Margaret Wokuri Madanda and former Kampala Capital City Deputy Lord Mayor Sulaiman Sserwada Kidandala as his sureties.

Court however denied the duo bail because there is a high possibility that they will commit the same offence once freed, considering they were previously charged before the same court on similar charges. The presiding Magistrate Muhumuza also stated that the details of the suspects are not clear especially their places of residence and relationship with the accused persons.

Muhumuza warned that the d integrity of court has to be protected and should never be involved in politics .

This is after the Prosecution led by State Attorney Ivan Kyazze asked Court to deny the accused bail on grounds that their sureties have not proved capacity to pay bail monies in case Mukaku and Besigye abscond from trial.

It is alleged that on June 14th, 2022 in Kikuubo, Shauriyako parish, Kampala city, Besigye and Mukaku without lawful excuse made statements indicating that it would be desirable to demonstrate, which could cause violence and damage to property. They were protesting the skyrocketing prices of commodities in the country.

The duo was sent back until July 1st 2022.
