The Buganda Road Magistrate’s Court has directed the immediate release of People’s Front for Transition party leader’s car, Dr. Kizza Besigye.

This follows an application filed by Besigye through his lawyer Erias Lukwago to have the car removed from the police where it was impounded three months ago in July 2022.

The white fenced Land cruiser Reg no. UAK 773K was impounded at Central Police Station (CPS) where it was towed following a protest in downtown Kampala.

Besigye fitted his car with megaphones and gagged wire mesh around the windows before entering downtown to protest. He was arrested and charged with inciting violence.

Today, Grade One Magistrate Asuman Muhumuza ordered the release of Besigye's car on grounds that the opposition leader’s case is in no way linked to the charges. He dismissed an allegation by one of the State Witnesses, a police officer, during cross-examination indicating that the car was part of the crime.

His Worship Muhumuza’s ruling was premised on Lukwago’s argument stating that the matter before the court is inciting violence and the vehicle has no relevance in the matter.

He also argued that the continued impounding of Besigye’s car is blocking his client from using it for other duties, including traveling from his residence in Kasangati to court for proceedings.

However, the prosecution led by State Attorney Ivan Kyaze objected, stating that the caged car can be used for protests again since it was designed in a way of protection.

The matter was adjourned to December 14, 2022, for further hearing of the main matter.
