Music star Cindy Sanyu has made it clear that retirement is not on her agenda, insisting that her secret to longevity in the industry is constant reinvention.
Speaking in a recent interview, the self-styled “King Herself” said her over 20-year music journey has been built on observation, learning from others, and evolving before the industry can move on without her.
“I’ve learned a lot from the people that have gotten cancelled. I listen a lot more than people think. I analyse a lot, and I try not to make the same mistakes they made,” Cindy explained.
Retirement Means Reinvention
Rather than stepping away from music, Cindy says her version of retirement is simply changing with time.
She pointed to legendary African musicians who continue performing at older ages as proof that music can be a lifelong career.
“I don’t think about retiring. My retirement is changing style, changing the branding and understanding where I am in life, not quitting music,” she said.
Balancing Marriage And Brand
Cindy also opened up about how marriage has influenced her career, saying she and her husband have had honest discussions about her stage image.
However, she stressed that her identity as an artist remains untouchable.
“I’m still the King Herself. That’s not a brand you marry. That stays on its own.”
Advice To Younger Artists
The veteran singer warned that many younger artists are making avoidable mistakes because they fail to study the journeys of those who came before them.
Having started her career with Blu*3 over two decades ago, Cindy remains one of Uganda’s most consistent and respected female performers—still evolving, still relevant, and still commanding the spotlight.
