Swangz Avenue co-founder Julius Kyazze has claimed that some Christians who attend Phaneroo Ministries services also participate in Kampala’s nightlife, arguing that church gatherings and entertainment events attract overlapping audiences.
Speaking on a local podcast, Kyazze recalled meeting Phaneroo founder Apostle Grace Lubega on a plane, where he proposed a possible partnership between the ministry and the entertainment company.
“There’s a time I met Pastor Grace Lubega on a plane, he was seated next to me and I proposed to him, ‘Why don’t we make a deal? You are with our flock on Thursdays and you sell them hope. But you know those same people come to me every Saturday to have some joy and enjoyment. I think there are synergies there,’” he said.
Kyazze argued that some people who attend church during the week also go to concerts and bars over the weekend, challenging the idea that the two lifestyles are entirely separate.
“If anyone tells you that the people at Phaneroo are not coming for concerts on Fridays and going to the bars on Saturdays, they are lying to you,” he said.
According to Kyazze, Lubega laughed off the proposal when he raised the idea, although he still believes there could be opportunities for collaboration between the church and the entertainment industry.
His remarks have reopened a conversation about the relationship between Christian faith, entertainment and nightlife in Kampala, with Kyazze suggesting that the same audiences may engage with both worlds.
