Media personality MC Kats has opened up about his decision to step away from artiste management, citing years of sacrifice, heavy financial investment and what he considers a lack of appreciation from the musicians he helped build.
The “King of the Mic” recalled how he fought to get Ugandan music played in local entertainment venues at a time when many DJs and bar owners were reluctant to support local artistes.
Kats said he often clashed with DJs and was occasionally thrown out of bars for pushing Ugandan music. His efforts eventually led to the establishment of a dedicated theme night at Fame Lounge.
He explained that he personally funded music videos, promotions and bar-to-bar campaigns because many of the artistes he managed were not investing enough in their own careers.
Driven by a long-term vision, Kats believed that helping the artistes gain recognition would eventually benefit everyone involved.
“Some nights, I was thrown out of bars because I was fighting DJs to play Ugandan music until we started a theme night at Fame Lounge,” he said.
However, Kats claims that once some of the artistes became successful, their attitude towards him changed. Instead of appreciating his contribution, he said, they began looking down on him and treating him poorly.
“No artist has done something as big as what I have done for them,” he said.
The experience, he explained, left him disillusioned with artiste management and traditional media work, prompting him to focus on building his own career.
“I’ve been employed for too long. Started working when I was 17 and I wouldn’t want to work for someone 30 or 40 years later,” he said.
Kats is now focusing on developing his own YouTube platform, where he plans to discuss real-life social issues, give back to the community and take greater control of his career after decades of working for others.
