The National Unity Platform (NUP) has entered a major internal realignment ahead of the 2026 General Elections, with several prominent sitting Members of Parliament losing the party flag after just one term.
The most shocking casualty is veteran legislator and NUP founding member Medard Sseggona (Busiro East MP), who lost his party card to local musician-turned-politician Mathias Walukaga. This decision underscores the NUP's growing priority for new faces and entertainers with strong grassroots appeal, even over experienced legislative voices.
Makindye East MP Derrick Nyeko, once a party firebrand, and Makindye West's Allan Ssewanyana, who has faced significant legal battles during the term, also failed to secure the party ticket. Their exclusion signals the party's move to distance itself from figures whose controversies might jeopardize its image for the 2026 race.
Former journalist Joyce Bagala, the Woman MP for Mityana District who unseated a sitting minister in 2021, was another surprising omission, highlighting the intense internal competition within key districts.
These lawmakers join a growing list of sidelined NUP MPs, including Christine Ndiwalana and Paul Nsubuga, alongside those who have defected like Mathias Mpuuga and Abed Bwanika to the newly formed Democratic Front, and Twaha Kagabo and Jimmy Lwanga, who crossed to the ruling NRM.
