Kenyan politician Raila Odinga rejected the result of an Aug. 9 presidential election in which he lost to Deputy President William Ruto.

On Monday, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukhati announced UDA's William Ruto as the fifth President of Kenya after he polled 50.5 percent of the vote.

His first comments on the result came after four of the seven election commissioners said they stood by their decision a day earlier to disown figures announced by electoral commission Wafula.

Overnight, Odinga's supporters battled police and burned tyres in the western city of Kisumu and the capital Nairobi's huge Kibera slum, but quiet had returned to the streets by Tuesday morning.

Addressing the nation from Azimio's media HQ in Nairobi, Raila alleged vote-rigging in Monday's result, calling it a major setback in the Country's budding democracy.

"Millions of Kenyans turned out in large numbers in an attempt to choose their leaders... But yesterday our budding democracy suffered a major setback. Kenya faces a grave legal and political crisis as a result of the actions of Wafula Chebukati, the IEBC [election commission] chairman." - He stated

He further accused the IEBC boss of disregarding the constitution and the laws of Kenya by pronouncing results amidst controversy. He also accuses the electoral chairman of bullying election counters who disagreed with him.

Odinga has until next Monday to file a challenge with the supreme court.

Speaking for the four commissioners, electoral commission deputy chair Juliana Cherera said the results showing Ruto winning with 50.49% were erroneously aggregated and that Chebukati had disregarded concerns about the tally raised by other commissioners.
