Events promoter Abbey Musinguzi, also known as Abitex, has officially abandoned the opposition to join the ruling government.
Over the weekend, Abitex, who serves as the President of promoters in Uganda, addressed the President during his birthday celebrations at Kololo Airstrip.
In his speech, Abitex revealed that promoters are struggling financially and need assistance. He asked the President to release funds through various Saccos for promoters. He explained that money lenders charge exorbitant interest rates and that government support would help them overcome this challenge.
Abitex also explained that promoters contribute a significant amount of tax revenue and therefore deserve government support. He also revealed that many people, including vendors, 'boda-boda' riders, and media personnel, earn a living through event promotion.
"President Museveni, we are struggling financially as promoters in Uganda. Money lenders are charging us excessive profits, which is costing our businesses. We are not earning. I am standing here to plead for financial help from you; we need the government to fund us through our Saccos. We provide jobs to many people through event promotion and also contribute heavily to tax collection, so we deserve your support," he explained.
Abitex also praised General Salim Saleh for always financially assisting promoters whenever the need arises.
