Famed Ugandan musician Sheebah Karungi is facing increasing heat following her failure to show up in court to fight allegations that she alone owns all her music, including pieces recorded under Team No Sleep (TNS).
Her legal team had previously made the declaration that Sheebah was the “sole owner” of her music collection, cautioning that any exploitation of her songs without her express permission constitutes copyright infringement. However, when TNS decided to take the dispute to court, arguing that the allegations were baseless and revisionist, the singer did not show up.
According to sources from the record label, which has been known for financing and nurturing the artist’s early success, TNS is now gearing up to get the court to rule in its favor regarding the ownership issue.

The legal experts also argue that there cannot be a one-sided determination of ownership in regard to music produced through a music label because all ownership is normally determined through the signing of contractual agreements. Moreover, failing to turn up in court may make Sheebah less influential when she needs the court's judgment most.
As a result, this lawsuit has become a crucial case determining the relationship between an artist and their music label in the Ugandan music scene.
