Veteran events promoter Abitex has revealed that he suffered significant financial losses after investing more than UGX 220 million in the recently concluded Comedy Festival at the UMA Show Grounds.

Speaking during a radio interview, Abitex said the event generated only UGX 150 million, leaving him with a loss of about UGX 70 million.

The promoter admitted that although his goal was to celebrate Uganda's comedy industry, the festival failed to generate the returns he had anticipated.

Abitex attributed the disappointing performance to what he described as a shortage of comedians with the ability to attract paying audiences.

“We have fewer than ten comedians who can attract crowds. People like Mariachi, Amooti, Maulana, and Reign are among them. I paid all the comedians because we wanted to celebrate our comedy industry. I hoped to make some money and invest in something tangible. The comedian who received the least amount was paid about UGX 500,000, yet if you put that person on a poster, they cannot even generate UGX 100,000,” he partly explained.

Despite being regarded as one of Uganda's leading event promoters, Abitex said his current priority is running profitable events rather than simply maintaining his reputation.

His remarks have reignited debate about the commercial viability of Uganda's comedy industry and whether large-scale comedy events can consistently deliver returns for promoters.
