Singer and songwriter Dokta Brain Doorkey has explained why some of his songs may not immediately connect with the average listener, saying certain music requires a deeper understanding of the craft to fully appreciate.
According to Dokta Brain, talented songwriters sometimes package their music in ways that appeal more to fellow creatives and people who understand the technical side of songwriting.
He cited his song “Street Culture” as an example, saying it performed well on streaming platforms but did not meet his expectations on YouTube because he believes many Ugandan listeners struggled to understand its concept.
“I wrote it because it was to be loved more by artists or people who are talented. I overpackaged it like a will,” he said.
Dokta Brain also revealed that some of his songs were initially written with the intention of selling them to other artistes before he eventually decided to release them himself.
He cited “Nkuwulila,” a collaboration featuring Kataleya and Kandle, explaining that several artistes he approached were either too busy or did not fully understand the song.
“Some of them didn’t understand it. So I took it, and in three weeks it had about 6k views on YouTube,” he added.
