Singer Joshua Baraka has urged fans and online commentators to stop comparing him to established artistes such as Eddy Kenzo, saying each musician should be judged on their own achievements.
Baraka said he has seen comparisons between himself and Kenzo, particularly following his performances on major international stages such as Afro Nation.
However, he said he does not pay much attention to the comparisons, arguing that ordinary music fans are more interested in supporting Ugandan artistes than creating rivalries.
“The common person will listen to your music, support you, and they’re genuinely happy for you, but it’s media people who always try to run particular narratives,” he said.
Baraka also praised Kenzo, describing his BET Award win as an important moment for Ugandan music and an inspiration to young artistes like himself.
“I remember when he won the BET. He came back, and we all couldn’t believe it that there’s a Ugandan who could go on an international stage and come back with an award,” he recalled.
He added that achievements such as Kenzo’s Grammy nomination should be celebrated as milestones for Uganda’s music industry rather than used to compare different artistes.
“Let’s try to be serious and positive. Let’s not compare but rather hold everyone to their standard,” Baraka said.
The singer further urged fans and online commentators to stop measuring one artiste’s success against another’s, arguing that such comparisons are often unnecessary.
“I feel like most people don’t even do it out of a good heart. Most people on the internet are simply bored,” he concluded.
