Youth leaders across the country have formed a group, code named kick age limitations out of the constitution, aimed at helping more young people acquire bigger government offices, including the presidency.
Led by the Hajji Ibrahim Kittata, the General Secretary Uganda National Youth Council, the group believes they have been sidelined for long, and changes need to be done, to allow youth become Chairpersons of LC3, Mayors, and Vice Presidents or even President.
Kittata was speaking to the press at a UGCA17 meeting in Uganda organized by youth under their umbrella body, “Uganda for all,” when he argued that the same qualifications apply to their Deputies.
“If a young person can be elected as an MP, to represent a constituency or even a district in the National Legislative Assembly, why can’t that person of 20 years be allowed to head a simple administrative unit of a district, or a simple town council or district?” Kittata wondered.
He added that; “We believe these laws are not only oppressive, ut are backward and do not answer the future questions of our generation, and as a generation, we are choosing to be known as those that opened spaces for a fellow young people to actively participate in the leadership of their nation beyond manipulation of simply voting and pinning up posters for those who stand for power.”
Under Article (102) (b) of the constitution of the Republic of Uganda, one is eligible to stand for president, if they are not less than thirty-five and not more than seventy-five years of age.
While, for one to be City Mayor, District Chairperson, Municipality Mayor, City Divisional Mayor and other related offices, they must be 30 years and not more than 75years.
